<image:title>Animation - Offing</image:title>
<image:caption>This animation is a short meditation; a grounding art work that offers a moment for stillness and focus. Offing is the furthest point on the water horizon as you look out to sea. It can also mean “near or foreseeable future”. The animation is a simple dissolve filter of graduating still images. The animation begins with an atmospheric effect becoming clearer as the circular form comes into focus. This is similar to the experience of observing a ship returning to shore after being out at sea. The work references energy, light, and third-eye consciousness. The still images are mezzotint prints, each inked in a different color sampled from the palette of East coast (NFLD) artist Reginald Shepherd (1924-2002). His serigraphs (screen-prints) were made using the neo-impressionist pointillist style (using small dots in various colors to form an image). The mezzotint circles and colors reference Shepherd’s pointillist style. The full series of mezzotint prints are found on the Prints page (see header navigation).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meditation on light and dark. The cloud image is adapted from a historical surrealist painting by Giorgio De Chirico. The cloud was reproduced as a photo-etching, then re-worked through drawing, scratching, and obliterating the image. <image:title>Doilies - Yellow Wallpaper</image:title>
<image:caption>Relief print, 30”x44” on Somerset paper The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman published in 1892. It is a semi-autobiographical account of her psychosis due to postpartum. The design and color palette of this print was based on the detailed descriptions of wallpaper in the short story. Perkins Gilman described the transformation of the wallpaper design to indicate the changing condition of her mental health: I never saw a worse paper in my life. One of those sprawling flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin. It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study, and when you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide - plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions. The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight. It is a dull yet lurid orange in some places, a sickly sulphur tint in others.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For the exhibition opening reception at Society of Northern Alberta Print Artists, a local bakery was commissioned to re-create a cake in the likeness of the prints. There are two cakes in the Doilies series; a birthday cake and a wedding cake. The commissioned cake was a simplified hybrid of the two prints. The cake was intentionally decorated using an over-the-top style. However; do not be fooled, the richness and texture of the cake was incredibly delicious. There is an art to cutting a tiered cake that I ceremonially practiced at the reception.</image:caption>

The letterhead is graphic ornamentation, with the text salutation, body and signature represented as lace patterns. The words and sentences are multi-colored, varied in texture and cadence. This indicates immature and disorganized thoughts. The expression of love is overwrought with vulnerability, excitement, and nervousness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Relief print, 30”x44” on Somerset paper This composition follows the format for writing a formal letter. The words and sentences indicate calm and order.; there is maturity and resolve in this design. The letter begins with a variety of red colors to indicate the expression of love. The color slowly changes from unsaturated red into a purple, then blue, eventually ending in cool shades of blue and grey. The story being told is the changing sentiment of love; the erosion of a relationship, falling out of love, and regret before finally saying goodbye.</image:caption>

<image:title>Doilies - Letter II, round robin</image:title>
<image:caption>Relief print, 30”x44” on Somerset paper This letter tells the story about the disappearance and mysterious circumstances surrounding Clara Wolcott-Driscoll’s fiancé (Edwin). He was the brother of Clara’s best friend George. Clara recounts the impact of the experience documented in a ‘round robin’ of letters shared with her mother and three sisters. The design of the print is based on a formal letter and begins with the color red to indicate love. The color changes and graduates into a simple debossment (impression only without color). Clara’s signature is written in gold; she reconciled the loss and understood the union was not meant to be. After all, she was better off in the end: The robin came unusually early—yesterday. I am so sorry I did not write at once about Edwin but I did not think of your hearing it so soon. It was after I wrote the last Robin that it appeared in the papers here. I had known it before but it had seemed unnecessary to say anything. His story, in brief, is that he (Edwin) came to consciousness down on the Mississippi, below the point to which the detectives had traced him. This was in September early, a little over a month after I left Chicago. [Edwin] says that he has no recollection of anything between that time and the previous election night in New York. This seems almost incredible to me for we, who saw him everyday, saw no change in him after that day. I saw him before Election day and the day after and there was certainly no difference. No chain of thought seemed to be broken or left off, or forgotten. When he came to himself, he was only able to do the simplest manual labor and felt that, in that condition he might better be dead to his family and friends; so he continued to wander about and get what work he could find, enlisting at last in the Army and going to Manila, being transported with his regiment to California. This was under another name (I have forgotten what). He then spent some time in California, gaining all the time in health until finally he took a responsible position in some new copper mine in the northern part of the state, where he was expecting to go when George first heard. He has been up there several weeks and Dr. Dickenson’s son is with him. So, there seems no reason why he should not stay where he is employed pleasantly as well as profitably. How much of all this is true, we can’t possibly know. It has told very much on George who feels the burden of his own responsibility, and the necessity of keeping every worry from his father and mother. This got out, no one knows how, just before Mr. Waldo had announced it, in a dignified and correct statement in the Danielson papers. I think there is not much doubt but that all this may occur over again, at any time; and yet, in his present condition, no one would have the right to confine him in an asylum. My feeling in the matter is wholly one of sympathy for George. Anything more that that ended for me years ago. My personal feeling could not be anything but that of deepest gratitude for an escape. -Clara Wolcott Driscoll, 1897</image:caption>

A grand house with spectacular grounds sits in the background. Panel two is the proposal. A man approaches her with a single rose, while her puppy begs to distract. <image:caption>Relief print, 30”x44” on Somerset paper This print is based on a silk book cover crafted and embroidered by designer May Morris for her father’s poems (c. 1888-91). Her father was William Morris, a textile designer of the British Arts & Crafts movement (1834-1896). Love is enough: though the World be a-waning, And the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining, Though the sky be too dark for dim eyes to discover The gold-cups and daisies fair blooming thereunder, Though the hills be held shadows, and the sea a dark wonder And this day draw a veil over all deeds pass'd over, Yet their hands shall not tremble, their feet shall not falter; The void shall not weary, the fear shall not alter These lips and these eyes of the loved and the lover. - William Morris</image:caption>

<image:caption>In printmaking, a rainbow roll (a gradient) is a classic technique used to impart multiple color in a single pass. It is not only used in intaglio or relief printing, but also woodblock, screen print, lithography, and letterpress. Moku Hanga (Japanese Watercolor Woodblock Printmaking) was popularized by ukiyo-e (which translates to ‘pictures of the floating world’). The use of color gradients, or Bokashi, was a common technique enabling the use of semi-transparent and bright colors. Gradients belong to the canon of technical printmaking.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Arc of love is a timeline; beginning with juvenile ideals and transitioning into a life long commitment and everlasting journey. Cotton linter and recycled matt board are the materials for the paper pulp. The first batch of paper incorporated maximal daisy petals as pulp slurry inclusions. Whilst making each batch of paper, the daisies diminished. The sheets of paper graduated into a range of hues after adding luster and sparkle pigments resulting in subtle tones of warm white, pink, green, and red.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Installation studio is 12ft width x 30ft length. Early spring in the mountains is re-created. Beside the simulated melting glacial river, handmade sheets of paper containing organic inclusions are propped on end to signal spring growth. At the far end of the studio is a framed series of clouds (etchings). These prints belong to a body of work titled Exempla (see the Prints page on header navigation).</image:caption>

<image:caption>A vignette installation includes an audio recording of a mockingbird. This bird (and many others like it) lived at the Cite Universite campus residence in Paris, France. Recorded on a cell phone in early morning; the bird simulates urban sounds from the residence such as voices, ring tones, alarm clocks, and humand activity. Click on the image and listen to the bird’s audio track (1 min 28 seconds).</image:caption>

<image:title>Installation - Dusk and moonlight</image:title>
<image:caption>Vermillion lake at night. This piece references memories of car rides with Baylee (my dog). When we couldn’t sleep, we would roll down the windows and take a midnight car ride along Vermillion lake road. The moonlight was especially reflective on the water during a clear sky. The silhouette of the mountains and valley are illuminated and back lit by the dusk sky. This light is reflecting off the dark water. Handmade papers were embedded with large glitter flakes to create reflective effects.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The last installation in this paper-based landscape series. This work became 3-dimensional and included a mobile. A rock protruded from the corner and a stream cascades. Above the small pond, a rain cloud formed to release droplets. A raven and a magpie play and take flight.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Poppy (Floriography), pulp painting, 22×30” I love the fake poppies we buy for Remembrance Day. I still remove the green centre (and pin) and wear the poppy like fake lips. Poppies represent death and eternal life. They are also associated with beauty and magic. In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy, Toto, and the Cowardly Lion fall into a deep, supernatural sleep on their way to Emerald City. It is broken when Glinda the Good Witch causes a covering of magical snow to fall, waking them up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ceramics - Peach bowl</image:title>
<image:caption>This bowl underwent two firings. For the first firing, I used a purple underglaze and a different glaze on the exterior. I was unsatisfied with the results so I fired it a second time. When firing, the effect of the off-gassing from the textile burnout of other objects inside the kiln resulted in a chemical reaction and changed the desired colors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Three blue underglazes were airbrushed onto the exterior surface. During firing, the vessel semi-collapsed inside the kiln. For display purposes, I made a white stand by coiling a slip-coated fabric. Multiple doilies were used to construct the vessel; the details and textures of the textiles remain visible on the surface.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ceramics - Sunflower</image:title>
<image:caption>The colors in Van Gogh’s paintings inspired this piece. Growing up, our family tv room had a poster of Van Gogh’s sunflowers. As a child I didn’t know the name of the artist or the historical significance of the image; the maker was anonymous and insignificant, but the work was influential. A crackle glaze was applied to the interior of the yellow vessel. The turquoise plant pot was made for display purposes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ceramics - Lilac</image:title>
<image:caption>Lilac’s are making an appearance in this work (and appear in some of my new pulp pieces). I loved lilac’s as a child. The peony is also influential. Both of these flowers have a short lifespan; the iris flower blooms for 2-4 days, while the peony blooms and drops its petals within 5-7 days. Some of the ceramic pieces could be considered still life.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Ceramics - Turquoise pot</image:title>
<image:caption>I played with two-toned airbrushing on the interior surface. The gradient is evident in many of my relief Doily prints and is strongly influenced by the canon and language of printmaking. As my confidence grew, I stopped doubling up doilies, and used single pieces of textile, allowing for more negative space and light.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ceramics - Yellow Heart</image:title>
<image:caption>I placed a heart doily on the interior bottom of the vessel. I liked the invitation of the bright yellow and the surprise of the heart symbol as one leans over to peer inside. For contrast, I used a white matte pastel glaze (exterior) and a bright yellow underglaze (interior).</image:caption>

<image:title>Artist Books - Doilies the meaning of life</image:title>
<image:caption>artist book (2018) The artist book Doilies the meaning of life is a compliment to a visual art exhibition. The works in the exhibition are relief prints; a printmaking technique of rolling ink onto textiles then transferring them to paper. The artist book includes two literary commissions. Two writers responded to a chosen work in the exhibition; Chamomile Tea, Sophie, and Me was Angela Schenstead’s response to a print titled Afghan, and Sloughing Cinnabar was Caitlynn Cumming’s response to a print titled Yellow Wallpaper. The artist book also includes selected text from personal letters written by Clara Wolcott Driscoll and a diary entry by Louis Comfort Tiffany, both of the Tiffany Glass Studios (1878 – 1933); these artists were important to the development of early American Arts & Craft industry. Their personal story was founded on collaboration, a professional working relationship, and mutual respect that inspired several prints in the Doilies relief print series: a triptych of letters titled The Round Robin, the Elephant lamp, and the Wisteria lamp inspired by designs created for Tiffany Studios. The artist book is a mode of story telling intended to stimulate the viewer’s imagination and give insight to the print series.</image:caption>
